Finding the right breed

by TShafer 04 jan

Finding the right breed can be so difficult, there are so many options!

From a tiny little 5 pound maltese to a 180 pound great dane. A furry little poodle mix to a short haired doberman. A snuggly little cavalier to a crazy high energy belgian malanois.

How do you choose the right breed?

Make sure to think about your lifestyle. Dont pick a breed based on how cute you think it is, pick a breed that suits your lifestyle.

Are you a homebody? Are you active and enjoy outdoor activites? Does your lifestyle support giving a working breed a job? Do you not want dog hair in your house to clean? Do you care about extra expenses of grooming?

There are so many things to factor in when looking for a dog breed for you! My #1 recommendation when picking a breed is think about all aspects of your life and do your research!

If you are a homebody who hates dog hair, don't get a german shepherd or husky.

If you don't have the time or desire to brush your dog freuently or bring it to the groomers, don't get a Shih Tzu or Poodle.

If you have an active lifestyle and are looking for your new advanture buddy;

Border Collie

Golden Retriever

Australian Shepherd

Poodle (or poodle mix)

Labrador Retriever

Husky

German Shepherd

If you have more of a homebody lifestyle and want a companian to relax with;

Shih Tzu

Cavalier king charles spaniel

Saint Bernard

Pug

Newfoundland

Welsh Corgi

If you absolutly hate dog hair and would rather groom your dog;

Shih Tzu

Havanese

Yorkie

Poodle

Maltese

Schnauzer

Bichon Frise

Samoyed

Airdale

Brussels griffon

(There are more non shedding breeds, listed are the more common)

Those are only some factors to put into consideration with common breeds listed that fit into those lifestyles. Think about the most important aspects of your life and how you want your new fur baby to fit into them, then research breeds that fit into those catagories. The biggest mistake new owners can make is picking a breed that has qualities that do not fit into their lifestyle. This can lead to behavior issues from not getting the proper stimulation and owners needing to surrender or rehome their dog due to it not being a good fit.

Check out  American Kennel Club to research breeds in depth to find a good fit for you! If you find a mix you like, make sure to check out both breeds to ensure its the right mix for you!
